Leadership courses and talks

Good leadership can be learned, and it does not necessarily require a large programme. Habberstad offers courses, workshops and talks tailored to your organisation, whether you need a single day of professional inspiration or a comprehensive leadership development journey over time. The goal is always the same: knowledge that is genuinely taken back into everyday working life.

Professional inspiration and a fresh perspective

There is not always enough time for large development programmes. Sometimes you simply need a little fresh inspiration in everyday working life. At Habberstad we offer various forms of learning, and we are often asked to give inspirational talks, run one-day courses or facilitate workshops for leaders and employees at our clients’ premises.

We run both digital and in-person courses, and our goal is always for participants to come away with relevant, applicable knowledge that they can put to good use in their everyday working life.

Our leadership courses and talks

We offer courses tailored to your organisation, but often building on one of the courses and talks we have developed for the business community. Many of our clients find it helpful to draw inspiration from previous courses before we together set learning objectives and develop course content that resonates with your target audience.

In the list you will find a small selection of our portfolio, the topics on which we run courses and talks. Do ask us if you are looking for a specific topic that you cannot find on the list. We will put the kettle on for a friendly chat about it.

Getting started with leadership courses

Many of the topics in our leadership development programmes are also delivered as modules or standalone courses. This means you can book one or more course days for your leaders, or get help to tailor a leadership development programme for your business.

In our leadership development programmes we usually deliver a blended learning journey consisting of in-person or digital courses and practical training or reflective work between sessions. Work between sessions may consist of individual work, problem-solving or practice in learning groups, or development conversations with the leader’s own manager. We place emphasis on practice-based leadership development that gives your leaders the foundation they need to succeed in the role.

How to succeed in the leadership role

A foundational leadership course about understanding the role and leadership identity. Here we talk about the leadership remit and which leadership skills are important and necessary for delivering results.

Participants become more aware of their own leadership, their strengths and development areas in the leadership role, and how to prioritise well in everyday working life to achieve the desired results.

The course is usually combined with practical training in leadership skills and often forms a foundation in our practice-oriented leadership programmes.

Self-leadership and stress management

The self-leadership and stress management course is for employees and leaders who need help to break out of the classic hamster wheel and find better flow and balance in everyday working life. This is about gaining a better overview of demands and expectations and establishing good techniques for prioritisation and boundary-setting in a hectic everyday routine.

This course can cover stress management techniques for acute stress, that is, how to navigate steadily and assuredly through a demanding situation, as well as raising awareness of the harmful effects of chronic stress and what it is important to be alert to in order to prevent sick leave and burnout.

This course is about building robustness and resilience, and we help leaders to make good choices for themselves.

At Habberstad we have several different variants of self-leadership courses and will always tailor the content and format to the client’s needs.

Communication training for leaders

Good communication skills are often the key to succeeding in the leadership role, and we rarely run a leadership development programme without communication being a central and fundamental element of the programme.

Our communication courses can cover everything from how to conduct good appraisal conversations to what is key to succeeding with a difficult conversation. Practical training is a central element of our communication courses, and a range of practical exercises is always included.

A classic communication training session will typically cover

  • How to give and receive feedback
  • Learning about open and closed questions
  • Listening skills and what gets in the way of good listening
  • Verbal and non-verbal communication
  • Coaching technique for leaders

The aim is to give leaders important conversation tools that help them achieve the effect they want and to learn what is key to good communication in the leadership role.

Conflict management

Conflicts in the workplace often have more serious consequences than necessary because leaders are unsure of their role and of how to handle difficult situations in everyday working life.

Understanding the root of conflicts, recognising early signs and applying effective resolution strategies can be decisive for good leadership, and how the leader handles conflicts can make all the difference between a productive and a dysfunctional team

Course content

  • Why conflicts arise and what lies at the core of most work-related conflicts
  • The conflict escalation ladder and how to identify the steps in the escalation
  • Techniques for defusing and resolving conflicts
  • Strategies for mediation and restoring working relationships
  • Tips for fostering a constructive approach to disagreement within the team

With this course, leaders will be better equipped to navigate the conflict landscape and to facilitate dialogue and resolution before harmful consequences arise for relationships and working conditions.

Self-leadership and time management

This course is about organising your own working day and how you can prioritise better and more smartly in a hectic everyday routine. We take defined business objectives as our starting point and break these down into concrete activities for the individual leader.

Here we work with tools such as the Eisenhower Priority Matrix, which helps the leader to prioritise well, and we take a closer look at what it takes to succeed with delegation. We also define possible obstacles to leadership effectiveness and help participants become aware of time-wasters and pitfalls.

The purpose of the course is to help leaders become more effective through correct and smart prioritisation.

Motivation skills for leaders

In this course we give leaders a fundamental understanding of what motivation is and the most important drivers of motivation and engagement at work. Participants learn about the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, and what the research says about the effect of intrinsic and extrinsic motivational factors. They learn about Herzberg’s two-factor theory and what this means in their own workplace. We then explore various risk factors and leadership styles that can be destructive to motivation and engagement at work.

After completing this course, leaders will have a good overview of what drives engagement at work, while also being aware of how employees differ, and will learn to identify what different employees need from their leader in order to function optimally in your workplace.

Team leadership and team development

Leading a team is not just about allocating tasks and ensuring productivity; it is about creating an atmosphere of trust, understanding and optimal collaboration. Google’s Project Aristotle highlighted the importance of psychological safety as a key factor in a team’s success.

In this course, leaders will learn more about:

  • Psychological safety: Understanding its significance and how to create and maintain it within a team.
  • Collective intelligence: Learn how to harness the combined knowledge and strength of the team for better decision-making.
  • Team contracts and rules of engagement: How to design and implement agreements that govern interaction and expectations within the team.
  • The path to good dialogue and collaboration: Techniques and strategies for fostering open, honest and productive communication.
  • Effective team meetings: Tools and best practice for ensuring that every meeting is purposeful, productive and valuable for everyone involved.

The aim of the course is to equip leaders with the skills and tools that foster a strong team in which every member feels valued and is able to contribute to their full potential.
